Hands-Free Grounding

A hand-held meter used to test the performance of ESD floors in combination with a person per ANSI/ESD STM 97.2. and IEC Standard 61340-4-5.

The electrostatic charge of a person walking on an ESD safe floor with ESD safe footwear can be measured with the EFM51WT Walking Test Kit. This test provides measurement data on the actual charge on a person while walking which is used to determine the effectiveness of the floor/footwear grounding system.

The EFM51 holds the PEAK value of the measured body voltage, as well as the LIVE static voltage measured on the operator’s body.

The kit includes the EFM51 static field meter, walking test adapter plate, hand probe and conductive carrying case.  The EFM51 is a fully function field meter that in addition to the Walking Test, measures and detects electrostatic fields, surface potentials and discharge times (with optional charge plate accessory – p/n 7100.EFM51.CPS.SET.)

Below is the procedure for the EFM51 walking test.  

Prepare the EFM51

  1. The EFM should be placed into the grounded foam base that is on a flat surface near the floor to be tested.
  2. Hold the function button until “change mode” appears.  Press the button until “Max Value” appears (This is 6 button presses). This mode will becomes active in 2seconds.
  3. Hold the probe in one hand and perform the walking test:

The operator walks on the floor section in a six-step pattern and comes to rest with both feet on the floor specimen in front of the EFM meter. The step pattern requires forward and backward steps and a cross over step:walking test pattern for esd tests

Perform the test three times and record the results.

 

Reading the meter:

  1. The upper display line indicates the maximum positive and negative body voltage generated on the person when walking.
  2. The lower line indicates the minimum body voltage on the person.

Understanding the measurements:

Two sets of measurements are obtained during the procedure. The first measures voltage generation during the walking cycle and is defined as the Maximum Body Voltage. The second measures the voltage obtained at the end of the cycle with both feet on the floor specimen and is defined as the Minimum Body Voltage.

The IN3425 is a versatile ionizing air nozzle that can handle many unique, narrow area applications with ease.

The Ptec™ IN3425 ionizing nozzle is a small, mountable ionizer that can quickly remove static in hard to reach areas that most ionizers. With their small size, the IN3425 narrow area ionizing nozzle can be used to eliminate static electricity from a focused point. Combined with a high air supply pressure, the spot-type static eliminators can be used to blow off dust and contaminates, separate clinging materials all while eliminating static electricity.With a variety of tip attachments, the IN3425 can be used in varying configurations in focused areas.

The ionizer constantly produces ions when on but there is a version with a photoelectric eye will produce airflow when objects are in proximity of the sensor: model number IN3425PE.

The METRISO 3000 test kit measures a wide range of values: low resistance from 1KilaOhm to1.2 TeraOhm. The kit comes with two 5lb disc probes and has an integrated temperature and humidity gauge. Measuring voltage can be set between 10 – 500V and also be varied if desired.

The VinylSTAT FM7 mat is made with permanently conductive PVC with a resistance of 10^3 – 10^5Ω. The homogeneous distribution of carbon black give this mat a continuous and permanent path to ground. “Near-Fail” Proactive Testing
The “Near-Fail” indicator is a function to give a warning when the measured resistance is in the PASS range but is within 10% (default) safe range of the high or low limit. Besides the PASS LED, the corresponding LED of the high or low limit will be turned on to warn the user that the wrist-strap or the footwear is “Near-Fail”. “Near-Fail” alert can be adjusted (increased or decreased) by Transforming Technologies – contact for more information.

Alarm Limit Adjustment:
The default upper and lower resistance limits fully meet the requirements of international standards such as ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 or IEC61340-2007 – for wrist straps (35meg alarm) and for foot straps (100 Meg).  If you have an application that requires different test limits, the PDT series has dip switch controls.

Verification and Calibration

The PDT800K is factory calibrated and annual calibration is not necessary. Verification tools that simulate a functional and non-functional wrist straps/footwear are available to verify that the monitor is functional.  It is recommended to verify proper working order with the PDT78PV  periodic verification unit at least once per year.

Mounting Options

The PDT800K is a freestanding tester which includes the testing device, footplate and pedestal stand. The unit is also available as a wall mount unit and does not include the pedestal stand (p/n PDT800).

Turnstile/Barrier/Gate System:

The PDT series testers have a built in N/C  N/O switch used with doors or turnstiles where a positive test allows the person to move through. The relay has contact rating of 1A 30VDC maximum and with the center contact as COMMON contact and the left contact as NC(normally close) and the right contact as NO(normally open).  These are the inputs that are used to connect the device you want to trigger.

The Model 287A is a low-cost and highly portable alternative to a charged-plate monitor for periodic verification of ionzer performance. It permits ionizer testing at the work location without the need to remove the ionizer from service for testing.

The PDT series provides you a state-of-the-art fast, safe, and extremely simple tool to fully meet your daily ESD checking need. It further assists you to effectively enhance the performance of the EPA control and administration.

“Near-Fail” Proactive Testing
The “Near-Fail” indicator is a function to give a warning when the measured resistance is in the PASS range but is within 10% (default) safe range of the high or low limit. Besides the PASS LED, the corresponding LED of the high or low limit will be turned on to warn the user that the wrist-strap or the footwear is “Near-Fail”. “Near-Fail” alert can be adjusted (increased or decreased) by Transforming Technologies – contact for more information.

Alarm Limit Adjustment:
The default upper and lower resistance limits fully meet the requirements of international standards such as ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 or IEC61340-2007 – for wrist straps (35meg alarm) and for foot straps (100 Meg).  If you have an application that requires different test limits, the PDT series has dip switch controls.

Verification and Calibration

The PDT700K is factory calibrated and annual calibration is not necessary. Verification tools that simulate a functional and non-functional wrist straps/footwear are available to verify that the monitor is functional.  It is recommended to verify proper working order with the PDT78PV  periodic verification unit at least once per year.

Mounting Options

The PDT700K is a freestanding tester which includes the testing device, footplate and pedestal stand. The unit is also available as a wall mount unit and does not include the pedestal stand (p/n PDT700).

Turnstile/Barrier/Gate System:

The PDT series testers have a built in N/C  N/O switch used with doors or turnstiles where a positive test allows the person to move through. The relay has contact rating of 1A 30VDC maximum and with the center contact as COMMON contact and the left contact as NC(normally close) and the right contact as NO(normally open).  These are the inputs that are used to connect the device you want to trigger.

ESD Socks: Works Great with ESD Shoes and Heel Grounders

Ensure that you are electrically connected to ground by wearing ESD socks with your ESD shoes or Heel Grounders. The toe and heels of the socks are reinforced with conductive yarn.  Made with polyester, spandex and conductive yarn.

Why Use ESD Socks?

The combination of ESD flooring and footwear can be an effective way to ground personnel to control electrostatic discharges when using a wrist strap is not practical. For this system to be effective, the ESD flooring and footwear must have a low enough resistance to allow the voltage from the operator to flow to ground. There also must be a good contact between the person and the ESD footwear.

While ESD shoes may be made with conductive materials, they require a layer of perspiration in the sock to provide a path-to-ground. This is a concern because there are many variables between people. Per ESD Handbook TR20.20 section 5.3.3.5 Common Testing Problems “Occasionally, footwear may indicate a high resistance…[A contributor being]heavy or insulative socks, or the absence of a sweat layer due to differences in temperature between the inner surfaces of the shoes and the wearer’s feet.”

You may see inconsistent resistance measurements from person to person, especially during colder months when employees wear heavier socks and sweat less. One person may fail a test at the start of a shift, and pass ten minutes later after a sweat layer is formed.

How much time is wasted waiting for shoes to pass a test? Or worse, how many sensitive items does a person come into contact with before their ESD shoes are truly acting as a path-to-ground.

Eliminate these variables and ensure a consistent path-to-ground with conductive ESD socks. ESD socks are made with conductive yarn which provides a reliable electrical path from the start and rely less on the wearer’s skin resistance for repeatable performance regardless of the environment.
